Roma Aeterna – eternal Rome

Roman antiquity has shaped the culture, architecture and society of Europe to this day. The educational exhibition takes you on a journey through time to ancient Rome and offers an insight into the everyday life of the Romans. The Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the Caracalla Baths are not only technical marvels, but also reflect Roman pride and the pursuit of power. At the same time, the models of these buildings make it possible to recognise the significance of this ancient heritage for Europe and its continued impact to this day. But the real life of the Romans did not only take place in these magnificent buildings. The exhibition also shows how Roman citizens lived and which everyday objects shaped their world.

Another highlight is the presentation of Roman leisure life: gladiator fights and chariot races in the Circus Maximus. These activities not only show the urge for entertainment, but also the political system and social hierarchy. This exhibition makes it clear that Roman life was never monotonous – it was a mixture of luxury and poverty, political intrigues and public generosity, artistic masterpieces and everyday craftsmanship.

The exhibition conveys the fundamental image of a civilisation that made an impact through both its splendour and its contradictions (slavery). A visit transports us to a world that has long since passed, but whose traces continue to have an effect today.

These insights can be deepened in educational workshops where participants can play Roman games, make a mosaic, cast a wax tablet, paint a vessel, create a perfume or cook using Roman recipes.
